I had the opportunity to facilitate a roundtable discussion about the next generation of ITO and Cloud Computing at a recent Sourcing Interests Group (SIG) gathering.

I recently made a trip to Bangalore, India where I had the opportunity to address members of the 2010 NASSCOM IMS Summit on infrastructure benchmarking and the future of cloud computing. While there, I met with more than 300 professionals and senior executives from the India-based outsourcing community where the foremost topic on everyone’s mind was cloud computing.

For most people in the outsourcing industry, cloud computing represents one of the most significant shifts and exciting shifts in information technology in recent years. Reaching the point where computing functions as a utility has great potential, promising innovations we cannot yet imagine. But despite the promise of innovation I find many businesses are still wrestling with concerns such as security and the loss of direct control over systems that potentially comes with cloud computing...

To Renew, Renegotiate, or Rebid: That is the Question

Renewals aren’t always the right answer.

Over that last five years service providers have become more efficient in providing higher quality services at a lower price. Additionally, outsourcing agreements have become more balanced and fair to both the customer and service provider.

In order to take advantage of these gains, customers have to enter into tough negotiations and potentially a competitive procurement. But, better contracts with price reductions as much 20 percent can’t be ignored.

But how do you even begin to understand how to get the process started? One of the most effective ways to begin is with a thorough market assessment. In other words, how does your contract quality, efficiency, legal protection, and rates compare to market agreements?

So what is the right answer – Renew, Renegotiate or Rebid? I propose the following:

Alsbridge Acquires TAG to add Telecom Solutions

What a way to kick off the New Year?  Alsbridge continues to grow organically and has just added a new service line to our suite of offerings to clients.  I’m excited!

We’ve just introduced what I believe is a step-change in the sourcing advisory space by acquiring TAG, the leading experts in procurement, contract negotiation and expense management of telecommunications services including voice, data, wireless, internet, local, and international services. 

In my opinion, Alsbridge already had the best methodology and database of information to assist clients to reduce costs and improve services levels in information technology and business processes.  Now, we have data-driven capabilities in the telecommunications network space as well. 

I’ve watched the outsourcing industry grow up and seen its sibling – the telecommunications network services industry – growing side by side.  And since moving to the sourcing advisory space in 2003, we’ve worked side by side with consulting firms in the telecom network spaces.  Combining the expertise in both spaces has long made sense to me, but I hadn’t found a firm with the right focus on service delivery excellence until we began talks with TAG.  The acquisition of TAG is a continuation of a strategic plan to acquire data-rich consulting capabilities to be able to provide a wider set of services to our clients and meet today’s as well as tomorrow’s need to reduce cost across the enterprise.

Alsbridge Supports the Troops

The Marine Corps’ birthday followed by Veterans Day are on the 10th and 11th of November each year.  They are special holidays for all veterans and Marines.  Marines often think it is rather special for the country to give them the day off after their birthday parties to relax and rest before going on to their next objective. -:) This year I am traveling to Toronto and back and will celebrate this weekend!

Tractors or Ferraris: Choosing Your Ride Well

In the recent past, there were three clear levels of infrastructure outsourcing that were easy to understand: managed services, hosting services, and the new entrant, cloud computing.  My prediction is the three have begun to morph into a single market that is now separated only by speed, access, and service levels.  Each developed independently into very different, viable options in this now single market.   Who would have ever thought GoDaddy, Rackspace and EDS would evolve and begin to slowly blur the lines on what IT outsourcing is?
